Introduction to Voice Recognition

What is voice recognition?

Alternatively referred to as speech recognition, voice recognition is a computer software program with the ability to decode the human voice. It can be used to perform commands, or write without having to use a keyboard or mouse. Many programs require the user to "train" the program to recognize their voice so that it can more accurately convert the speech to text. Once the program (software) has been loaded onto a PC or laptop the files dictated can then be transcribed automatically into text by the user or sent to a secretary to do on their behalf, checked and printed.

What does voice recognition need?

For voice recognition to work you need a computer with a sound card and either a portable digital recorder, microphone e.g. SpeechMike or a headset with microphone. You will also need a program like Nuance Dragon Naturally Speaking.

What you CAN do with the software (depending on the version)

  • Dictate letters
  • Send emails
  • Open and interact with programs such as Excel or Internet Explorer
  • Dictate into Dragon's built-in editor for copying & pasting into any application that Dragon cannot control directly.
  • Dictate into a Digital Recorder whilst away from your desk for later downloading into Dragon
  • Create Custom Commands that will do a series of tasks such as:

1.      Open a program

2.      Load a template

3.      Enter variables into placeholders

4.      Save the file

All of the above can be done without touching the mouse or keyboard.

What you CAN'T do

  • Transcribe meetings - for voice recognition to work effectively every person needs their own profile geared to their unique voice pattern.

Advantages over basic Windows and SIRI Voice recognition

  • 95% accuracy ‘out of the box'
  • Can achieve 99% accuracy after training
  • Correct errors by voice ‘on the go' to quickly train your profile
  • Dictate into and control many different applications
  • Create series of tasks that can be activated with one voice command
  • Build a ‘vocabulary' of shortcuts that will quickly enter many lines of text just by speaking a short phrase.
  • Format text by voice.
